BUYER'S GUIDE
How to Spot a Scammy Male Enhancement Supplement (Before You Buy)
The male enhancement supplement category has more than its share of genuinely scammy products. Here's a practical checklist for spotting the warning signs before you hand over a card number.
1. A Proprietary Blend That Won't Name Ingredients
If a label lists a "Male Power Complex" or similar vague blend name without naming every botanical inside it, that's the single biggest red flag in this category. Legitimate formulas can disclose exact ingredient names even when they don't break out individual milligram amounts within a blend.
2. Claims to "Treat" or "Cure" Erectile Dysfunction
No dietary supplement is legally allowed to claim it treats, cures, or prevents a diagnosed medical condition like erectile dysfunction — that's exclusively the domain of FDA-approved prescription medication. Any supplement making that claim directly is not being honest about what it legally can and can't say.
3. Zero Real Research Citations — or Fake Ones
A supplement page with no research references at all is one warning sign. Slightly worse: vague references to "clinical studies show..." without naming the study, the journal, or the year. Real, checkable citations are a low bar that a surprising number of products still don't clear.
4. Manufactured Urgency and Fake Scarcity
Countdown timers that reset when you refresh the page, "only 3 left in stock" messages that never change, and "today only" pricing that's identical every day are manipulation tactics, not honest scarcity.
5. No Real Refund Policy (or One Full of Loopholes)
A confident product backs itself with a genuine money-back guarantee. Watch for guarantees that only cover unopened bottles, require you to pay steep return shipping, or bury a short window in fine print.
6. Subscription Traps at Checkout
Pre-checked "auto-renewal" boxes buried in the checkout flow are one of the most common complaint sources in this category. A legitimate one-time purchase option should be clearly available without hunting for it.
The Bottom Line
None of these checks require special expertise — just reading past the marketing copy to the actual label, policy, and checkout page. A product that passes all six isn't guaranteed to work, but a product that fails several of them is a real reason for caution.
